Livelihood and Skill Development

Nepal is small but is renowned for having an abundance of beautiful nature. The User Committee has taken into consideration that the work of conservation is not strong unless the problem of livelihood and local awareness is solved. So, it has encouraged locals to find ways of earning in their own surroundings by running various skill development programmes. Mrigakunja User Committee has provided training to 497 peoples in a variety of skills such as tailoring, poultry farming, fabric painting, Handicrafts and so on. It has helped the people at ground level earn up to Nrs. 8,000 -10,000 per month by using their skills in production of wooden items, fabric paintings and even long grass.
This work has proven that if a suitable environment is created by offering opportunity and a good chance of earning to the people then conservation gets motivated in return. It prevents youngsters immigrating to foreign countries for employment and livelihood, which seems to be a growing problem in Nepal. This has especially motivated local retailers and shopkeepers of the tourist village of Sauraha, who now buy artwork and wooden crafts such as carved Rhinos and Elephants from locals rather than importing Indian goods like they used too. This has also encouraged them to rely on each-other and created a good feeling of inter-dependency amongst the community.
